“Ulysses”
Sir,—l notice from the advertisement for the film "Ulysses,” that it is to be shown to segregated audiences only. Having seen the film some time ago to London, where it was shown to mixed audiences (who were apparently considered sufficiently adult for this experience), I am surprised that we to New Zealand are so conservative as to accept segregation of the sexes at this film. The censors appear to think it might be embarrassing if we took a member of the opposite sex to see this film, but not if we go by ourselves or with a male friend. Probably, I feel, many mature couples would like to see this film together. I only wish the censors would understand that we have reached sexual equality to New Zeeland and that segregated audiences should be a thing of the dark past—Yours, etc., p. j. l. McNulty. July 20, 1960.
[Mr D. C. Mclntosh, Chief Censor and Registrar of Films, had no comment to make on the letter.)
