MISSILE BASES
U.K. Within Range (N.Z.P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) MUNICH, July 24." A newspaper published by the West German Minister of Finance (Mr Franz-Josef Strauss) said yesterday that the Soviet Union was installing missiles in Algeria that could reach London, Paris, and Hamburg. “Bayemkurier,” the weekly newspaper of Mr Strauss’s Christian Social Union, did not disclose the source of its “indisputable details” about the Soviet missiles. It said: “The launching pads for the medium-range missiles already stand ready. The first Soviet missiles have already arrived.” W’ith a range of about 1870 miles, the missiles could reach every European capital, the newspaper said. They threatened Paris as much as London and Hamburg. The Algerian missile bases were concentrated round La Calle, near the Tunisian border. This position showed that they were aimed northward, “because the radius of action against Europe is shortest from this point.”
