Flights To Chathams

The airstrip at Hapupu, Chatham Islands, was not yet in good enough order for the resumption of the Bristol Freighter service, said Mr J. Ferrier, of Christchurch, yesterday. “A Civil Aviation Division expert examined the airstrip about five days ago, and it will be examined again towards the end of this week,” said Mr Ferrier, managingdirector of Tasman Aii - Services, after he had returned from a flight to the Chathams. His firm has been using a Navajo aircraft to fly to the Chathams since the Bristol Freighter service was cancelled earlier this month because the Hapupu airstrip was waterlogged. Mr Ferrier said that the outlet of the Te Whanga lagoon had been cut, and the lake level had been lowered six inches as the water in the 29,000-acre lagoon found its way to the sea. “The weather has been fine, but it is the rainy season and wet weather could knock back the airstrip,” he said. “The crayfishing in the last week has not been as good as it was formerly.” The Navajo service was well booked and the aircraft was taking a limited amount of airmail letters to and from the Chathams, said Mr Ferrier.
