Woman’s Claim Reported Hoax

(N.Z.P.A.-neuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, July 20. A grandmother who claimed she had given birth to a child at the age of 58 shut herself in her house today, and refused to admit callers, as newspapers quoted her as saying that it was all a hoax. Mrs du Plessis, the wife of a deaf-and-dumb railways employee, startled the world last week with the announcement she had given birth to a fivepound baby girl. But the “Sunday Tribune,” of Durban, and the Afrikaanslanguage “Dagbreek En Landstem” said that Mrs du Plessis, had told them “it’s not my own baby.” Dr Jonathan Gluckman, president of the Southern Transvaal branch of the South African Medical Association, told reporters: “The matter has been drawn to our attention, and the facts given by Mrs du Plessis are incorrect.”
