MAORIS AND THE CHURCH

Joint Course Decided (N.Z. Preni Al»ociation> ROTORUA, July 21. Maori Anglican clergymen at a meeting in Rotorua adopted an interlocking course with the pakeha section of the church in the movement towards church union. They rejected an alternative proposal that would set Maoris apart from the main body of the church. The two proposals were submitted to the Maori clergymen by the Joint Council on Church Unity. The meeting’s recommendation,.announced this morning by Canon N. Te Hau, Rotorua, will be considered by the National Council of Churches later this month. The conference was told that the Presbyterians and Methodists favoured a separate role for Maoris in the united church, but the decision to recommend an interlocking course was made with only one dissension, that of the Rev. M. Marsden, of Auckland.
