NEW TYRE TESTED

One of the new fibreglassbelted tyres was given an unusual test in Australia recently. The tread and sidewall rubber was stripped off the tyre so that the polyester cords and the fibreglass tread-belt were completely exposed, and the car with the tyre fitted to a front wheel

was then driven at speed over more than 80 bricks placed on the ground. The car was driven over the bricks six times, and after this the wheel rim was sufficiently damaged to cause a tyre leak, although the tyre itself had not failed. The test was watched by police, road safety, and transport officials. The polyester and fibreglass tyres are said to give twice the life of cross-ply conventional tyres. Two firms, Goodyear and Dunlop, are marketing the new tyres in Australia.
