RICCARTON HOPE

Running Waters raised hopes of a Riccarton victory in the Novice Stakes at Waimate tomorrow when he ran the last three of six furlongs brilliantly on a rain-affected No. 6 grass at Riccarton yesterday. Running Waters, with his race-rider, D. Reed up, was not bustled in the early stages of his trial—his six furlongs took 1:22 4-ssec —but he gathered speed quickly on the home turn and dashed home from the three in 37 4-ssec.

Running Waters has no recent form of worth, but seems much improved by his two races in a fresh campaign. Intervene (A. H. Eastwood) and Count Como (M. Cohen) were paired over five furlongs and were timed over the last three in 40sec. Although he lacks racing since March, when he finished third at Ashburton, Intervened latest work in training has been sound and he could strengthen the possibility of a Riccarton victory in the Novice Stakes. Count Sigma, the lone Riccarton runner in the Redcliff Hack Handicap, was let off with an easy six furlongs. He took Imin 28 3-ssec for the distance and quickened slightly over the last three in 42 l-ssec. G. McLean rode him in yesterday’s gallop, but E. G. Low will have the mount tomorrow.

Coral Prince (D. Reed) took 42sec for the last three of four furlongs. He could be a lightweight prospect in the Morven Handicap, first leg of tomorrow’s main double.
