Hunt Club Will Run Creche At Races
A creche for children between eight months and eight years will be provided for the first time at Riccarton by the Christchurch Hunt when it holds its annual race meeting on July 26.
“There is a social amenity we are providing so that mothers, who usually have to stay at home with their young children, may enjoy a day at the races with their husbands,” the hunt’s secretary (Mr P. J. Byrne) said yesterday. Many members of the Christchurch Hunt were young married people who would now be able to bring their children to the meeting, instead of leaving them
at home in the country with a sitter, he said. It was hoped that city families would also take advantage of the creche.
The creche will be in the old members’ tea kiosk behind the main totalisator. Children will be supervised by members of the nursing division of the St John Ambulance Brigade. The creche will be heated, food and drinks will be on sale and a special area will be set aside for prams. “I am most enthusiastic about the idea of a creche,” Mr Byrne said. “We hope to give the children a day’s fun to remember.”
There will be swings and slides, and members of the Ferrymead Pony Club will give children pony rides. There will also be indoor entertainment at the creche.
