WIDENING THE SELWYN RIVER BRIDGE.—A 28ft baulk being lowered on to the Selwyn River bridge, on the Main South Road, yesterday. The carriageway is being widened to 24ft, from 18ft. and will have a 2ft kerb on each side. The decking, made of Bin by 2in treated pinus laminated beams, has been prefabricated in Christchurch. The wooden beams will be covered with three inches of asphalt road surface. It is expected that the 1050ft-long bridge will be reopened to traffic next month. At present the road detours through the dry riverbed.
