Freighter Dispute

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 10. The Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) has been approached by both parties in the dispute on the manning of the sugar ship, Hudson Deep, to appoint a chairman to consider a possible settlement A meeting has been suggested between the disputing parties under the chairmanship of someone to be appointed by the Minister. “I have already indicated to both parties that if the provision of a chairman will facilitate discussion then I will be happy to provide one," said Mr Shand. The Auckland Seamen’s Union wants New Zealanders to man the Hudson Deep on its regular Auckland-Queens-land run in place of the British crews which have sailed her.
