Judgment Awaited j (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter— Copyright) | JOHANNESBURG, July 10. i Judgment will be given tojday in the trial of the editor-lin-chief of the Rand “Daily ;Mail,’’ Laurence Gandar, and one of his senior reporters, Benjamin Pogrund. They have pleaded not guilty to charges of publishing false information about prisons without taking reasonable steps to verify the facts. I If found guilty, they could |be given a maximum sentence lof one year’s imprisonment, lor a fine of 200 rand (about 3NZ248).
During the 88 days of the hearing, the prosecution called 105 witnesses, and the defence, 16. The trial record of about 1,300,000 words covered 4974 foolscap pages.
