Fewer New Houses

The number of new dwellings. completed was 21,764 in the year ended March, compared with 23.297 in the March, 1968, year and 24,704 in the March, 1967, year, says the Minister of Housing (Mr Rae) in the annual report on housing, tabled in Parliament yesterday. Building permits issued, however, increased by 4 per cent in number and the value rose by sl4m from sl6lm to sl7sm in the March, 1969, year. Mr Rae said the trend in recent years had been to construct about 1500 State rental units a year, and the number actually completed in the last year was 1534. Despite an increase during the year in the income limit used to determine eligibility for this class of housing, the number of applications on hand at the end of the financial year had decreased by 1703, or 23 per cent.
