POLICE SURVEY PROCEEDING

(Hew Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 9. A survey of police organisation and establishments will be completed by the end of the year, according to the Government White Paper on crime tabled in Parliament today.

This national survey of the police service was approved by the Government in 1966 to examine the most effective and economical use of manpower, staff needs, streamlined work procedures and the gathering of reliable data for administrative and operational planning. At the end of March, 1969, the effective strength of the police stood at 2950, an increase of just on 500 in a period of 10 years.

Police staffing was based on one policeman to every 950 people and this figure was reached in September, 1968, the White Paper said. The Government gave its approval of a formula of 1:890 and recruitment to this basis would commence next year when it was expected the 1:920 formula would be overtaken.

The White Paper said police training had been intensified at all levels. •
