NO UPSETS IN SQUASH
The top four men’s and women’s seeds won their matches in the A grade of the New Zealand squash rackets championships in Christchurch yesterday.
Three of them were taken to four games. The top men’s seed, D. Burmeister (Palmerston North), kept an immaculate length for most of his match with J. H. N. Pine (Christchurch), keeping the ball down, so that Pine found few opportunities to volley. The most interesting firstround game was between G. L. Bird (Ashburton) and K. Wilton (Rotorua), a nominee for the New Zealand team. Bird was as usual a mixture of brilliant shots and careless errors. He recovered well from 3-7 down in- the first game. Strangely, he neglected to hit to a length in the second and third games which enabled Wilton to gain the position to hit many fine winners. Wilton, unlike a number of the other A grade players, was prepared to go forward and attack the ball. The Christchurch player, Mrs R. Woodhead, put up a great fight against Miss Lawes, winning the third game and narrowly losing the second at 9-7. Today in the men’s quarter-finals, the main interest will centre on the BirdGreen match. Green was not extended yesterday by R. M. Carrington (Auckland).
