Use Of Green Dye On Poison Baits

The Pest Destruction Council had agreed to have green dye added to poison baits during their manufacture at the factory in Waimate, the council of the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society was told last evening in the report of the game committee. The committee had written to the Pest Destruction Council and to pest destruction boards urging greater use of green-dyed baits so game birds would be protected, and advising that the dye was available free from the society, the report said.

Oats were the most serious problem, said the chairman of the committee (Mr G. Mugford), He moved that the society emphasise that phosphorised oats must be dyed. Dr D. McK. Dickson said he had seen a poison line of carrots and the green dye was hardly noticeable. The society should write to the Internal Affairs Department to tell it that the standard of dyeing was causing concern and ask it to set a date when a representative of the department could speak to pest destruction board foremen on the use of the dye, Mr Mugford said. The department had said it would provide someone to speak to foremen, although, it did not intend to hold courses.
