Obstructed Hydrants
“As a city councillor I am staggered to think that parking meters are so located that they infringe on fire hydrants,” the chairman of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board (Mr N. G. Pickering) said last evening. He was commenting on a report by a member (Mr D. B. Rich), who said that he knew of at least two meter areas in the heart of the city where it was almost impossible to park without impeding access to a fire hydrant Mr Rich said that one such meter was in Cashel Street between High Street and Colombo Street If a truck parked within the meter area it would be impossible to get access to the hydrant. This was serious because the area could be dangerous in the event of a fire. Other board members said that they had noticed other meter areas where it would be difficult for the brigade to get access to hydrants. The board instructed the Chief Fire Officer (Mr F. A. Hardy) to prepare a report on the situation after inspection.
