Contraband Found In Tasman Ship
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 9. Contraband was found in the Tasman cargo ship Kaitoke at Wellington today.
A small haul of tinned foods, toy slot cars and chinaware was found 15 minutes after customs officers boarded the Kaitoke. A bird also was seen to fly out of a port-hole then drop into the sea. The police launch Lady Elizabeth combed the harbour, without success. The bird might have been a doped parakeet, customs officers said. The search of the Dutch freighter Straat Singapore continued without further success. Opium estimated to be worth $174,000 on the black market was found on the Straat Singapore when it berthed at Lyttelton from
Hong Kong and Suva on Friday. Watches and radios worth $lOOO were also seized. When the ship called at Dunedin more radios and car coats and jewellery were found.
