BARREL RESTAURANT

In Melbourne, the restaurant trade has borrowed the idea of West Germany’s Bad Durbheim barrel to build a barrel restaurant on a hill site about 18 miles out of town. The owners claim that their barrel (capacity 9,000,000 litres) is the biggest in the world. Opened in November, 1968, the Eltham Barrel is doing a thriving business supplying good food and drink and good cheer in the German manner. It can accommodate up to 350 guests. Tucked into a hillside, surrounded by eucalyptus trees, the Eltham Barrel gleams in the Australian sunshine, inviting guests to a sample of German-style hospitality.— Australian News and Information Bureau.
