Truck In River, But Driver Escapes
(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, July 8. The driver of a heavy truck and trailer escaped serious injury yesterday when the unit fell 150 ft into the Buller River, 15 miles west of Murchison.
The police said the vehicle failed to take a sharp lefthand bend after crossing O’Rorke’s Bridge, and then plunged into the flooded river.
The driver, Raymond Henry Miller, aged 22, of Greymouth, was badly shaken. His only recollection of the accident was that he suddenly realised that the cab was under water. “I saw an open window and struggled out,” he said. He apparently swam to the shore, clambered to the highway, and stopped a vehicle to get a ride to Murchison, where the accident was reported. Cattle crates and four cows were being carried by the truck and trailer. Three of the cows were unharmed, and were found later. The river is deep where the accident happened and both the truck and trailer were almost submerged.
