HAGLEY H.S. LIBRARY

Mr H.R. Peers Honoured

The new library at Hagley High School was opened yesterday morning by the chairman of the school’s board of governors, Mr H. R. Peers, during a special assembly attended by the board, parents and other visitors.

The library will be known as the H. R. Peers Library in recognition of the work done by Mr Peers for the school.

The headmaster (Mr T. R. Richards) said that the library gave the school an opportunity of expressing its appreciation of the work done by Mr Peers, a former pupil of the school in the 19205, a member of the board of governors for 20 years and chairman for the last 15 years. Mr Peers had always taken a keen interest in the school and its pupils and had been a constant contributor to the school library, said Mr Richards. Mr Peers expressed his pleasure at the library being named after him, as he considered a library the greatest educating medium known to man after school itself. He said a well-balanced library offered scope for research, travel and general knowledge not available so readily in any other form. “Use your library to the fullest extent, avail yourselves of its wide variety of services, travel the world, get to know other people and learn their customs and cultures through your library,” Mr Peers told pupils. It was announced that the board had allocated $5OO from reserve funds to buy new books for the library, which has 9000 books at present
