Rating Comparisons
Sir, —Now that the local bodies have decided their needs for the coming year, I am wondering if it is possible to obtain comparisons of rates payable in various parts of the city. Taking a typical city property with an unimproved value of $2OOO with improvements at $6OOO, could you please advise the following: (1) Would all such properties rated by the City Council pay the same? (2) If not, what areas would vary and by how much? (3) What would such property owners pay if residing in Christchurch City, Heathcote County, Paparua County, Waimairi County, Riccarton Borough?—Yours, etc., RATEPAYER. June 20, 1969. [1 and 2: Yes, except for minor variations in a small area not in the Transport Board’s district, the few unsewered areas, and in the case of the Catchment Board’s Waimakariri River rate, which is slightly less for hill properties. 3: Christchurch city, $105.47, of which the council receives $59.43 and the ad hoc bodies $46.04. Heathcote county has one general rate, and the assessment, worked out as if the property were near the council office, would be: county rates and water charges, $56.80; ad hoc boards, $45.36; total $102.16. Riccarton Borough: $25.60 in council rate and water charge; $39.48 for the boards; total, $65.08. Paparua and Waimairi counties have different rates for different ridings. The Paparua assessment, based on the Sockburn rate, would be: county, $37; boards, $37.74; total, $74.74. The Waimairi figure, based on the Middleton riding rate, would be: county rate and water charge, $34.64; boards, $48.24; total, $82.88. In Fendalton riding, the total rates would be $84.64]
