Power Off The whole of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board’s district except the Malvern County was without power for up to an hour yesterday when a fault developed at 9.27 a.m. in a switch when it was being operated at the New Zealand Electricity Department’s Islington distribution centre. The District Engineer of the department (Mr H. W. Jennings) said that the cause of the switch breakdown was being investigated. As the switch was operated, it arced, and this cut off the board’s feeder. The board’s engineer (Mr P. D. Rutledge) said that some parts of the board’s district had to wait half an hour for power to be restored, and the full supply was not available for an hour after the breakdown. Water For Sale A buyer is wanted for 150 dozen quart bottles of pure water. The order for bottled water, was made when the Chateau Tongariro’s water supply was endangered by the eruption of Mount Ruapehu. Bottles were placed in every bedroom. But now the Chateau’s spring-fed water supply has been cleared, and the manager (Mr W. E. Traill) is looking for a buyer for the bottled supply.— (P.A.). No Grant No grant will be made by the Paparua County Council to the Christchurch Civic Orchestra Foundation’s appeal for funds. A council meeting last evening was told by the finance committee that only one of the district committees had favoured a grant. Kiosk Service The Staircase Kiosk, on Mount Ruapehu, which suffered damage in the eruption, will provide a limited service to skiers from next week-end, the manager of the Chateau Tongariro (Mr W. E. Traill) said yesterday.—(P.A.)
