PROTEST IN MELBOURNE

U.S. Consulate Attacked (N.Z. Freit Ann.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, July 6. Police patrolled the United States Consulate in Melbourne today after a windowsmashing attack on the building late yesterday by vandals who later claimed to be members of an Australian “Peoples’ Liberation Army.” Eye-witnesses said a group of .young men hurling ink bottles and stones, and one wielding an -iron bar, smashed 18 quarter-inch plate glass windows at the consulate. Later a man telephoned Melbourne newspapers and radio stations and said that he was one of 13 members of the “Peoples’ Liberation Army” who smashed the windows. He said: “We successfully demonstrated our opposition to United States imperialism and the futility of simple protest and legitimate dissent.” Last Friday night the Consulate was the scene of a clash between police and thousands of demonstrators in a July 4 protest against the Vietnam war.
