THE UNITED STATES FLAG which the commander of the Apollo 11 space mission, Mr N. A. Armstrong, hopes to plant on the moon. The 3ft-by-5ft nylon flag, on an 8ft staff, will be kept “flying” in the moon’s airless atmosphere by a spring-loaded wire in the nylon cloth. The flag, shown folded at right, will be stowed in two 4ft sections strapped to the lunar module ladder during the Apollo 11 flight.
