SEARCH OF ERIE
170 Still Missing (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CLEVELAND, July 7. The Coast Guard late yesterday resumed a search of Lake Erie for about 170 people still unaccounted for after a storm lashed Northern Ohio during the July 4 holiday, killing 32 people. The search had been called off shortly after dark yesterday, but was resihned when the Coast Guard received a number of calls between 9 p.m. and 10 p.m. “We got about 70 calls from people we hadn’t heard from before, so we decided we better keep up the search all night,” said a Coast Guard information officer. He said it was still hoped that those unaccounted for had reached harbours or coves where lack of communication facilities might have prevented them from contacting anyone.
Violent rains and 100-mile-an-hour winds had churned across the northern part of the state, killing 16 people along Lake Erie. Sixteen others drowned in floodwaters about 60 miles south of Cleveland.
