rpHE promising Rangiora ■* forward, J. Quinn, will make her debut for Canterbury in the South Island women’s indoor basketball championship tournament to be held at Gore on Friday and Saturday. She has been included in the team of nine for the championship by the chief coach-selector (Mr R. Entwistle). Three other players who have already worn Canterbury colours C. Reuben (Rangiora), P. Ruwhiu and D. Hesson—have yet to play in their first South Island tournament. However, the team, although slightly below possible strength, is not short on experience and has a good chance of regaining! the title won last year by : Otago. Much will no doubt depend on the form of the two prominent Checkers players, J. Baker and S. Rennell. Baker, back in the game ; after a year away, will be the captain and main centre I for the tournament. In the I Canadian Goodwill Tournament earlier in the season i She showed that the lay-off I had done her no harm by : scoring 53 points in three ; games. In her last game against Marlborough she topped the scoring with 30 I points. A New Zealand rep-1 resentative in 1967, she is ; clearly back to her best' form. Rennell has been Canter-1 bury’s highest scoring for-1 ward in recent years and | her early performances in- 1 dicate that she will again attain this honour this sea-: son. She scared 49 points in ; three games at the good-; will tournament She has been on the verge of selec-1 tion for New Zealand sev-I eral times and good per-: formance this week-end would certainly enhance her chances. Canterbury’s main prob-: lem will be its lack of arid-: court players. The entire ; team, mainly because of players not being available,

consists of centres and forwards. J. Harding, a Nelson representative last season, is the only player with experience in mid-court and most of this was gained this season. She was a forward before transferring to Canterbury. Among the players not available were the former New Zealand and Nelson representative, H. McGuinnis (Rex), D. Broughton, G. Hanham (University) and C. McMaster (Rebels). The team will meet Eastern Southland, Otago, Nelson, Southland and Otago juniors in the tournament.
