20m MORE 2c COINS BOUGHT
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 1
Demand for 2c coins has grown so much in the two years since the release of decimal currency in New Zealand that 20 million more have been bought by the Treasury for circulation.
The 2c issue is only part of the new 1969 coin issue but as yet it is the only one made available for circulation.
A Treasury official said
today that 10 million sc, 3,000,000 10c and 2,500,000 20c coins had been ordered.
No 1c or -50 c pieces had been ordered. This was the first new order since the bulk buying in 1967. In 1967 120 million 2c coins were minted, but because they were a new coin- it was difficult for Reserve Bank officials to determine the demand. One of the reasons for the rapid disappearance of 2c coins was believed to be hoarding of the coins in private piggy banks or jars.
