DECISION ON LAND
Mr Muldoon Disappointed (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 1. The Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) said yesterday he was disappointed by the decision of the Canterbury University Council not to allocate land at Ham for a proposed student village. Mr Muldoon said he had arranged for a Treasury officer to go to Christchurch to meet the University Council and students. He said the community was only too willing to criticise students. It seemed that in this particular instance the students were going out of their way to help themselves and accordingly should be given every encouragement. He was most disappointed that the University Council had rejected the students' proposal. He did not think that the construction of the student village at Ham would in any way hold up progress on other projects. He hoped the Government could provide financial assistance by making certain guarantees available. He rejected a charge by Mr D. W. Bain that in making a direct approach to the Minister of Finance the students had gone over the heads of the University Council.
