Australia Sets Defence Limits

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 1. The Prime Minister (Mr John Gorton) made it quite clear yesterday that his Government would not take over the complete defence of any Asian region.

H e was addressing a luncheon of top Jewish leaders in Sydney and gave his first public speech on defence issues since the recent fivepower talks in Canberra. Mr Gorton said that Australia “is not giving blank cheques on Australian lives.” ; Australia would only help those that helped themselves, he said. , Mr Gorton emphasised that Australia was not going to become involved in any internal aggression and “it is

necessary for everyone to un- , derstand this. “We must become involved in the regions where we live,” he said, but added that the involvement had its limitations. “Up till now a situation . has existed where we contributed because the defence ; of those countries was a responsibility of Britain. i “Now that Britain is with- , drawing, we cannot take over the responsibility of defence in those areas. “Local populations must as. 1 sist themselves and contri- • bute to that defence,” the • Prime Minister said.
