Students To Meet Over Decision
To show they were concerned over apparent obstruction by the University Council in the provision of essential student accommodation, all students should attend a special general meeting of the Canterbury University Students’ Association this evening, said Mr F. Baird, a member of the association’s executive, last evening.
He was commenting on the council’s rejection of requests from the association to consider allocating land at Ham for a proposed student village.
Mr Baird said that the student community scheme would be fully discussed at the meeting, and that those present would be asked to give it support. The project was the sort of accommodation desired by students themselves, and was essential in the Ham area if they were to study success-
fully and participate fully in all aspects of university life.
Mr Baird, who has prepared a report on the economic feasibility of the scheme, said the Vice-Chancellor (Professor N. C. Phillips) and other council members had been kept fully informed of developments. He said that informal discussions had been held with the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon), who had given every encouragement and assurances of financial support under certain conditions.
