Golf Ball Size Test
(N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON. St Andrew’s Is planning a new experiment to determine the advantages of different tiled golf balls. The Royal and Aneieht Club has announced that a comparative test of the playing performance of the 1.62 in “small” ball and the 1.681 n “large” ball would be held in its autumn medal golf competition. The elub says it win be a condition of play, applicable on both days of the medal, that the large or small ball shall be used at spedfie holes during the round.
Half the field will play the large ball at holes one
to three and 10 to 15, and the small ball at the remaining nine holes. The other half will reverse this schedule-small ball at holes one to three-,and 10 to 15 and the large' ball at the remaining holes. The medal is being run in this way at the request of the golf ball committee, which was set up in 1968 to work ip conjunction with the United States Golfing Association, to try to find a uniform ball for golf throughout the world. The club considers that by playing the medal competition in this way it will be possible to compare average scores with either ball, both over 18 holes and groups of holes.
