LONDON, June 30.
Passengers from the Canadian Pacific airliner which was forced to make an emergency landing at Shannon Airport last night described the mid-Atlantic drama. “There was a hell of a bang and the plane shuddered. It only lasted a second, but we knew something had hit us,” Mr John Buss, aged 27, of Manchester, was reported saying in the “Daily Mail.” “I felt the sweat running down my brow and felt very apprehensive. We strapped ourselves in and waited. The wait was unbearable,” he added. “There was a rousing cheer and lots of applause when we landed. The captain came through the plane and thanked us all for being so calm,” he said. Another passenger, a Canadian, Mr Daniel Boyd, aged 74, said: “There was a heck of a bang and some pieces of metal broke through the door and part of the tailplane. “We were all worried and frightened until the captain spoke to us. He told us calmly that the engine cover had blown off the number three engine and that we were turning back to Shannon on three engines,” he said. “Because pressure was lost in the cabin, the flight was a bit hard on the ears. But nobody needed to use the oxygen. The stewardesses helped everybody from getting too nervous,” he said.
