Saigon Bans ‘Newsweek’

(N.Z.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, June 20.

The South Vietnamese Government has banned the latest issue of the American magazine, “Newsweek.” An official spokesman said it contained “an article with false arguments detrimental to the national stability.” The issue has two articles on Vietnam, one headlined: “Vietnam Exodus: A Favoured Few.” It describes preparations being made by rich South Vietnamese to leave the country as a precaution against any Communist takeover.

According to the article, many hundreds have already slipped out to self-imposed exile in Europe or the United States, and many hundreds more are clamouring to leave. Issues of “Newsweek” have been banned in Saigon on several occasions in the past. Last month, the Government banned an issue of the magazine, “Time.”
