Local venue for Thomas cup-tie?
TF the New Zealand men’s x badminton team beats Australia in the first round of the Thomas Cup tie at Melbourne in July, Canterbury will be allocated the second round match between Singapore and New Zealand, later this year.
New Zealand has an excellent chance of winning the tie against Australia, particularly after the success of the youth team which took part in the Australian championships at the end of last season.
Six players have been nominated in the New Zealand team: J. W. S. Compton, W. H. Johns, B. S. Purser, D. W. Higgins, B. R. Purser and M. Stossel. R. S. Purser is undoubtedly the best player in the team and Compton won the Australian open singles title last year as a member of the youth team.
B. R. Purser is the youngest player nominated and he also played excellently in Australia. He won the Australian junior singles and doubles titles and reached the quarter finals of the open singles. Compton, Johns, and the two Pursers have also been chosen in the Whyte Trophy team with Misses R. Glenie and G. Tomkins, and Mesdames V. Gow and G. Weatherley. The Whyte Trophy is played between New Zea-
land and Australia every two years. The Whyte Trophy team will leave for a tour of Australia on July 6 and play the Whyte Trophy test on July 24 and 25. The Thomas Cup tie will be played on July 29 and 30.
