Waipara Conference

A FARMERS’ conference " will be held at Waipara again this winter. Known as the North Canterbury fanners’ conference, it will be held at the Waipara hall beginning at 1.30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 16, and will continue that evening. Organised by the Department of Agriculture, in conjunction with Amberley, Amuri, Cheviot, HawardenWaikari and Omihi branches of Federated Farmers, it will be opened by Sir James Wattie, of J. Wattie Canneries, Ltd, of Hastings. Speakers in a symposium on beef cattle will include Mr M. J. H. Davidson, a farm consultant, Mr S. D. Reeves, a fanner, of Lismore, MidCanterbury, and Mr P. T. Norman, general manager of Borthwicks. A range of subjects will then be dealt with by Mr C. W. White, manager, vegetable processing factory, Hornby, who will discuss processing crops; Mr L. H. Weston, farm advisory officer of the Department of Agriculture at Dunedin, whose subject ’will be fencing; Mr G. A. J. Greig,

forest extension officer of the Forest Service, who will speak on farm forestry; and Mr T. W. Jones, a farm adviser from Britain, who will speak about farming in the United Kingdom. After an adjournment for an evening meal, Mr J. B. Brown, the Valuer-General, will discuss land value, Mr H. E. Connor, of the Botany Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the effect of water control in North Canterbury, and finally Mr L. W. McCaskill, a member of the North Canterbury Catchment Board, will discuss the functions of a catchment board. A panel discussion will conclude the evening. A meal will be available at the conference and the price of admission at $1.20 Will include this. Tickets for the conference are available from secretaries of the Amberley, Omihi, Hawarden - Waikari, Amur! and Cheviot branches of Federated Farmers, the headquarters of Federated Farmers in Christchurch, and the Department of Agriculture in Rangiora.
