| Spending More On Fertiliser j Can Reduce Production Costs Spending mors per acre on fertiliser can reduce production costs, as this actual case, taken from a Mid-Canterbury wheat crop, shows. One-half of a paddock of Arawa wheat yielded 60 bushels per acre, while the other half yielded 80 bushels. The difference was purely the result of the fertiliser used. 60 Bus. 80 Bus. per acre per acre INCOME $1.35 per bus., less 20 cents for heading, bags, cartage $1.15 $69.00 $92.00 LESS Seed ... $4.00 $4.00 Cultivation: 2 hrs. at $2.50 $5.00 $5.00 Overheads: interest, rates, R. & M., insurance management $lB.OO $lB.OO Fertiliser: 1} cwt. super at drilling .... $2.50 3 cwt. super at drilling plus 2 cwt. ammonium sulphate topdressed in spring .... $lO.OO Total costs, including fertiliser $29.50 $37.00 NETT PROFIT PER ACRE $39.50 $55.00 Nett profit per bushel 65.83 cents 68.75 cents Total costs per bushel 49.17 cents 46.25 cents Nett profit up by $15.50 per acre Nett profit up by $2.92 cents per bushel Totel costs down by $2.92 cents per bushel Fertiliser cost up by $7.50 per acre This example shows that it is total costs per unit of production and not total costs per acre that are important. It was the spending of an extra $7.50 on feriliser alone that allowed an extra nett profit of $15.50 per acre to be made, and costs to be reduced by 2.92 cents per bushel.
