A Matter Of Approach
What was disturbing the questioner was the distinct bias towards selection for high production, said Professor A. E. Henderson, professor of wool science at Lincoln College, when he answered a question from the floor at a symposium held for Border Leicester breeders in Christchurch this week.
Professor Henderson was replying to a breeder who was critical of Coopworth sheep he had seen earlier 1n the day at the college. The Coopworth is the new breed based on the Border
Leicester and Romney. The speaker contended that they were not a true Border-Romney cross. Professor Henderson said he did not know whether the questioner had read the specifications of the Coopworth breed society. The approach with the Coopworth was distinctly utilitarian. One had to expect that the sheep might seem to be rather mixed. But he thought that, on a productivity basis, they would be uniformly even and high producing.
