Riccarton H.S. Growth
The developmant plan for Riccarton High School, outlining the school’s growth rate and means of coping with it, had been completed, the headmaster (Mr T. R. Hitching)) told a meeting of the school's board of governors this week.
"This plan is a block plan and not one in detail, but it incorporates a time acale and provides for the school's growth over the next five to 10 years,” he said. Plans for addltons to one of the school’s buildings, which would give another four classroom) and another small room, had been completed. “Tenders for this may be called for soon and we nope to have the additions finished about the end of the second term next year,” Mr Hitchings said. A trial floodlight Will be erected to illuminate the school’s car park. It had been suggested at the last meeting that the main entrance and car park should be floodlit, and an application was made to the Department of Education for a grant to assist in installing the lights. The department requested more information on the scheme in a letter received at the meeting. Mr Hitchings said that it had been arranged for a temporary light to be installed on one of the school buildings as a trial. The board agreed to the suggestion that the works committee inspect the trial system before further decisions on the number, type and siting of the lights are made. AD alternative blazer for fifth and sixth form boys was shown to the board. Mr Hitchings said that the school Parent-Teacher Association had expressed concern about the quality Of the cloth used in the existing blazer. Tbe new blater, which the boerd Will consider approving for use, is of a heavier material and is lined.
