Stray Dog Problem
“Something has got to be done to make irresponsible dog owners aware that the council will act,” said the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich), when the Waimairi County Council was told last evening of a stray dog problem. The inspector (Mr I. H. Wilson) said strays were biting and annoying people in the Sawyers Anns Road-Veitch Road block. He had impounded five dogs. Two had been claimed, but the main biting dog was still not claimed. Mr Rich said that the situation seemed to be getting worse. He had had a complaint about stray dogs at Redwood. A number of owners had been warned that the next complaint would result in prosecution. The council decided to take legal action against the owners of the dogs referred to by Mr Wilson.
The Marine Department will officially commission a new research ship in Wellington next week and name it the James Cook to mark the bicentenary of Captain Cook. The vessel, formerly the Sea Harvester 11, is at Lyttelton dry dock for painting.
An officer of the Marine Department said yesterday that the ship would run between Bluff and the North Cape and be manned by research staff from Wellington. The home port would be Nelson. F
The ship will do research into fishing catches rather than fishing techniques as undertaken by the W. J. Scott. A crew has been appointed and the ship will put to sea immediately after the commissioning.
