WOMEN CHANGE NOSE SHAPES
(N.Z.P.A.‘Reuter —Copyright) PHILADELPHIA, June 19. A growing number of American women are > undergoing plastic surgery to change the shapes of their noses, according to surgeons throughout the United States. Most women offer photographs of their favourite film stars as examples of the kind of noses they want. A major problem involved in the nose “job” is that a changed profile may emphasise other facial contours such as a double chin or sloping brow. The surgeons were reporting to a seminary of science ; writers held recently in Philadelphia. Dr Ralph Millard, professor of plastic surgery at the i
University of Miami School of Medicine in Florida, said a large number of women who had their noses changed did not realise that chin operations were not only available but advisable in some cases. Plastic surgery in general is enjoying a boom in the United States. Films, television and newspaper advertisements continue to emphasise the importance of looking young in a country where half the population of 200 million is under 30. “ The older half rely on vitamins, exercise, slimming courses—and plastic surgery —to keep up with the young generation. Men as well as women are turning to the plastic surgeons to make them look younger. Bald men seek hair transplants and over-weight Americans of both sexes undergo surgery to alter flabby chins, legs and arms.
