TE PUKE RICE
Strong Demand Reported (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 18. The demand for 103 tons of rice harvested on semi-experi-mental farms at Te Puke in Aprjl was so great that milling could not keep pace with it, said an Auckland businessman involved in the project. After a disappointing demand last year, the processors did not buy pew milling equipment for this year’s crop, said Mr A. E. Macartney. Now the company’s plant at Rangiuru, near Te Puke, could not bull and polish the short-grain rice quickly enough to keep up with orders. New machinery would arrive in August. In September, 125 acres of rice will be planted—2s acres more than last year—for harvesting next April. Prices for the rice, delivered to Auckland or free on rail, were still $9 to Sl3 a ton less than the recently rescheduled price for Australian rice of $196 a ton.
