Cycling Less Amateur?

"The Press” Special Service WELLINGTON. D. A. Comparini, potentially one of New Zealand’s best pursuit riders, believes that cycling is no longer an amateur sport. Since representing New Zealand in the 4000-metre individual pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in Jamaica in 1966, Comparini has made only sporadic appearances on the road and track. He is still troubled by an injury to his right knee. Comparini said he was concerned at the “tremendous increase” in the price of equip-

ment and the necessity to take time off work to stay with the best in New Zealand. “I cannot afford a new bicycle,” he added. “I think the Government should do something to help stop the rising costs. “I would need to take two half-days off work a week if I was to train properly. If I can do this my workmates should be able to do likewise.” Comparini, however, does not see his career as finished. “I will take another look at the position next year,” he said.
