ALL COMETS GROUNDED

Every Comet airliner in military transport aircraft in the world was grounded last night after cracks had been found in the control mechanism of several planes. The grounding decision was made by Hawker-Siddeley, in consultation with the Air Registration Board. A spokesman for the firm said the cracks, discovered during routine ground tests, were in a hydraulic plunger, and could have led to failure of. the plane’s controls. He added, however, that the part made in Britain by Lockheed Hydraulics, could be checked and easily replaced by any airline's maintenance staff. Each aircraft should be out of service for only 24 hours. The Comet the world’s first jet airliner,. first flew In July, 1949. It went out of production several years ago. v>
