Trading Bank Cheque Books
Sir,—l feel that I must support “Regret the Change” on the new cheque books. Contrary to Mr Smillie’s assertions, the new books are definitely not favoured by the majority of users. I have discussed them with numerous users, and as a result undertook to voice my disapproval to my local bank manager. Unfortunately, my complaint did not appear to be taken seriously. Actually, One of the
employees of that same bank had previously told me that complaints at the counter were numerous-r-“practically everyone seemed to object to them.” However, for obvious reasons I could not disclose this source of information. One particular deficiencyinsufficient lines for cheque details in the “butt"—is so obvious that no comment should be necessary. In any case there is far from sufficient room for such details in any of the new books. It would seem that in designing them the convenience of the customer has been completely ignored-.—Yours, etc.,

Sir, —I find it hard to understand the comments of “Regret the Change” and those of the research director of the New Zealand Bankers’ Association. When I called at the Bank of New South Wales yesterday to collect my new computer-style cheque book I found that it was complete with individual butts for each form for the description of the cheque and also to show the running balance. What is more, the book had numbered deposit slips at the back and an attractive plastic cover was provided gratis. Perhaps your correspondent and Mr Smillie should shop around. —Yours, etc., 8.8. “P.M.N,” “Gave em’ Away,” “Not Adapted,” “Customer Always Right?” and “Retrograde Step” support the objection of “Regret the Change” to the form of the new trading-bank cheque books. The first-men-tioned says he was told when he first complained that the system was “for computer convenience”; and he adds: “They seem to have forgotten customer convenience.”
