Circular Sorting Tables
Sir, —Your article on a circular timber sorting table describes it as the first of its kind in the country to be used at a sawmill. Not so. On the day that the Haast Pass route was declared open, I and several others made the journey from Greymouth to Jacksons Bay. Midway between Haast township and Jacksons Bay the main road passes through the sawmilling township of Okuru. It is here that the large sawmill of Carter Merchants is situated. We stopped at this sawmill and saw its large circular sorting table in use. It might not be in use just now as a Are destroyed the whole sawmill plant some months ago. At the time the Okuru firm shipped timber via Jacksons Bay and may still do so. This necessitated making up packages of timber from the circular sorting table, of a size suitable for loading on to lorries by large fork-lifts.—Yours, etc., G.J.W. June 18, 1969.
