Registration And Transfer Fees
When buying a second-hand car from a dealer you should make certain of the arrangements for the payment of transfer fees and the registration of change of ownership. The Transport Act has been amended recently in regard to the payment of change of ownership fees and now says “The person selling or disposing of the motor vehicle shall be primarily liable for the payment of the fee.’’ Since taxation measures increased the transfer fee from 81 to §5, it has become usual for the dealer to negotiate the sale on either a “plus transfer fee” basis or “including transfer fee.” Unless the vehicle is on consignment, the dealer has usually paid a $5 fee to have the car transferred to his name, and the 85 fee for
change of ownership to the new purchaser will usually be included on the sale note ot the car. In the event of a trade-lie being accepted it is common practice for the 810 fees incurred by the double change of ownership to be shared. When a new vehicle is purchased, the registration, purchase of number plates and sticker and third party insurance are added to the cost of the vehicle. If a vehicle is registered some months after the beginning of a licensing period a proportionate part of the annual fee only is payable, plus number plate and sticket and third party insurance costs. The dealer will attend to these matters and number plates and sticker will be attached to the car at the time of delivery.
