MAY CLOUDY AND MILD
Cloudy conditions prevailed most of May, reducing the sunshine hours to 41 below average, says the monthly weather summary from Lincoln College. The sun shone for 90.7 hours and 2.65 inches of rain fell, compared with 1.4 inches in May last year. However, the rainfall this year is only 8.74 inches, compared with 17.38 inches at the same time in 1968.
Air temperatures in May were slightly above normal, the maximum being 70 degrees on May 13 and the lowest 32.2 degrees on May 6. There was frost on eight days. In other’ respects the weather was normal, says the report. Mild condition encouraged pasture and forage crop growth, enabling a reduction of hand-feeding to ewes and the closing of some pastures. Potato digging progressed unhindered and many crops had been lifted by the end of the month. Cultivation was difficult early in the month, but improved after the rains. Some wheat was drilled during the last few days.
Motor-cycl. Win,.—B. Smith <Australia) and G. Molloy (New Zealand) won the 350 c.c. and 500 c.c. events respectively in an International motor-cycle race at Zistersdorf, near (Vienna.
