Checkers Has Big Basketball Win
Checkers A overwhelmed Rangiora B, 81-12, In the women’s indoor basketban matches at Cowles Stadium last, evenings. Checkers were superior In all phases of play and they threw the ball around the court as they pleased. In the other match, Bex A beat Checkers B, 18-15, in a tight and Interesting match. CHICKBU A n (S. Rennell 28. P. Wadsworth 18. J. Baker 11, M. Smeaton 6). RANGIORA ■ 12 (B. Matteson 4). The ball went swiftly from one Checkers player to another with machine-like efficiency and Banglora was seldom In the game. However, it did not give up trying and made a late rally to score a number of points. Checkers scored so highly because they had a host of
opportunities and used all of them. S Rennell was outstanding and was well supported by P. Wadsworth. RIX A 16 (J. Fairhall 6. G. Thompson 4). CHECKERS B 15 (B. Nurse 4). This was a closely-contested game all the way through. Play tended to be somewhat sloppy at first but improved later after a large number of fouls had been called. L. Fairhall played well for Rex with some good shooting. In the middle stages of the game the Rex team’s passing was superior to that of the Checkers team. The half-time score was 6-6 which rather favoured Checkers who continued their burst well into the last stages of the game. However, a final effort by Rex, when it capitalised on some wild passing, gave it victory. G. Thompson played well for Rex, saving several certain goals. G. ?<urse was prominent in aLi aspects of the game. Other senior results were:— University A 34 (D. Broughton 14, S. Lee 10), Rebels A 14; New Brighton A 35 (S. Ancall 10, H. Collins 8), New Brighton B 17. Lower grade results were:— B Grade.—Orients A 29, Masons 10; Rebels B 33, University B 14; Burnham 21. Rex B 19.
