Late Scoring By New Brighton
NEW BRIGHTON IT: T. Bracefield D. Beardsley and E. Leask tries; C. Henderson two penalty goals and a conversion. SYDENHAM 3: W. Cuff a try. An Interesting final 29 minutes wss the only solace for a handful Of spectators at Lancaster Park south—the other 50 minutes of play were Indecisive and unimaginative.
For once the New Brighton eight did not master their opponents and the New Brighton backs, with only a 50 per cent share of possession, were not particularly effective. Similarly the Sydenham back-line at no stage functioned well enough to suggest that it might score tries. The stalemate abated over the final stages and after an opportunist try to Bracefield, New Brighton was rampant. Two more tries were added in quick succession to swell A 6,-3 advantage into a 17-3 victory. Henderson was the best of the New Brighton backs with his long kicking and generally sure handling. At first five-eights, C. Smith, also kicked well be gain much ground. For Sydenham, B. O'Keefe, at fulLback was competent. On the right wing. Cuff ran well to score Ms side's only points: T. Bradbury wae a neat fiveeighths.. I. Penrose was in superb form for New Brighton, showing again that he is a genuine clubman as well as a provincial captain. Unfortunately K. Tanner was too occupied with settling personal differences to play constructive Bugby. Sydenham's locks, D. Rhodes and R. Higgs, jumped well In the line-out and R. Doell and O, McKenzie wore active loose forwards. Referee: Mr D. J. Wiley.
