DEATHS IN TWO ACCIDENTS

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 13. An Army major and a 14-month-old baby were killed in separate accidents involving cars and trucks south of Auckland this afternoon.

The child died after the car being driven by her mother, struck the back of a trailer on the southern motorway at Manurewa about 2.15 p.m. The child was Lisa Charmayne Howe, daughter of Mr and Mrs G. R. Howe, Takanini Road, Clevedon. Mrs Howe, who suffered shock and cuts to the face and hands, was treated at Middlemore Hospital and discharged.

The Army officer was Peter Stanley William Gifkins, aged 48, of Ranger Avenue, Mount Roskill, who was based at Papakura Military Camp. A soldier was also injured when the Army car struck the back of a truck on the State Highway No. 1 three-quarters of a mile north of the Thames turn-off about 4.15. p.m.
